More than a few reviewers said that they had trouble starting the stove, and that the stove would often flare up right after it was started. To get around this problem an experienced Coleman stove user suggests: “Just let it shoot up the yellow flames for one or two minutes; then, pump it up to about 70 pumps or so (not the 35 that the direction say) and let her rip.”
Related to the yellow flame/blue flame issue – If you don’t keep it pumped up or give it a good pump up to begin with you will experience yellow flames which signify poor combustion. Yellow flame is sooty so if that happens while you have pots on the stove you will get a soot residue on the bottom and sides of the pots.

The stove has all those folding pieces and many sharp edges. You can cut yourself fairly easily.
After a few seasons or very frequent use the stove will need maintenance. The whole stove should be taken apart as far as possible and cleaned. The o-rings may have to be replaced.
What Customers Liked:
The big burner will take a good size pot and it puts out enough BTUs to get it boiling while you work on other dishes with the smaller burners.
The stove is not propane. Some people complain about that but you can get gasoline anywhere so you will never run out of fuel. A full tank burns for a long time. You can cook a whole day even for a big crowd without worrying about running out.
The stove is fairly big and at 20 pounds it’s not going to get knocked off the table every time somebody bumps into it.
You have be willing to do a little maintenance and keep the generators clean, but if you do this stove is plenty rugged and reliable.

We purchased this stove last season and took it still in the box to the Grand Tetons, 12 hours from our home. Next morning, with great anticipation, we opened the box, filled the tank with fuel, pumped it up and turned the valve. Fuel started leaking from the valve assembly. We were in camp, had a campfire burning not five feet from where we were leaking highly volatile gas. We moved the tank further out of camp and depressurized the tank, drained it the best we could and repacked everything. This season we unpacked the stove to check it out and found that the assembly plant had not installed the -O- Ring at the valve seat thus causing the leakage. Contacted Coleman two weeks ago and have received only an automated reply. Called Coleman and was tied up in their automated answering tree and could not leave a message or talk to a live person. Coleman offers a Limited Life Time Warranty on this stove. It may take my limited life time to get any action from Coleman.
The store I purchased the stove from has since gone out of business so no return opportunity there. The moral of the story, test your father’s days gifts the day you get them.
