Whether you’ve got a few square feet of outdoor living space or a spacious suburban backyard you can find your special place and turn it into a sanctuary when you combine Earth, Fire and Water with a little planning.

If you have the room connect the indoors to the outdoors with a stone or designer concrete patio. Precast pavers and stamped concrete come in many colors and patterns and can be used in all climates. Decorative concrete can create the look of authentic stone, slate or cobblestone, is more economical to install and adds value to the home.

Ring the perimeter with small trees, bushes or decorative planters to create a green barrier between your special place and the rest of the world. At least for a short time each day. Even a small amount of greenery can fill the eye and tell your brain that you are outdoors. Keep it close and within reach to create a sense of privacy and exclusivity.

Next, you need a fire pit. Make it elaborate. Make it simple. Nothing speaks of the outdoors like open flame. Keep the chairs or the sitting area within view of the fire pit. A barbecue grill can work if you don’t have the space or the time for a more permanent structure. A removeable cover on your grill adds a touch of campfire authenticity to the flame.

Of course you want to cook. You always want to cook something over the flame. Even if it’s marshmallow s’mores. The aroma. The act of cooking and providing. The sharing with family and friends. All these combine to trigger warmth, security and closeness.

Chances are you don’t live next to a majestic waterfall. You’re going to have to get creative. There are lots of choices for self contained water features. A pedestal fountain can work in a pinch. Make the water visible, make it move, and make it sound like water. A noisy pump is a mood killer.

It doesn’t matter how urban or sophisticated your everyday environment may be. Mix human beings together with Earth, Fire and Water, serve them a little grilled food, and without ever a conscious thought they’ll treat you like you were Mother Earth.
